Daiya’s New Savory Gluten and Dairy-Free Flatbread

Daiya is a leader in plant-based cheese, with their mozzarella-style shreds debuting in 2009. Since then, they have created various gluten and dairy-free products, including cheesecake, pizza, macaroni and cheese, and salad dressing. Their latest creation is a crunchy flatbread that can serve as an appetizer or meal.

History of Flatbread

Flatbread originated in Ancient Egypt. Bread and flatbread are similar. However, flatbread is unleavened, which means it’s made without yeast. Flour, water, and salt are the key ingredients. After being formed into a flat, oblong roll, it’s baked in a brick oven.

Daiya Flatbread, Mushroom, Caramelized Onion & Fig

Daiya flatbread is a perfect example of what the Japanese call umami. Umami is also called savory, which describes the taste of this flatbread. Umami is one of the five basic tastes, along with sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. This flatbread has a combination of all five basic tastes.

Plant-based mozzarella and feta cheese top Daiya’s gluten-free flatbread. It’s also garnished with mushrooms, caramelized onions, and figs. The cheeze melts like real cheese and has the same texture. The sweet fig blends well with the salty cheeze and the taste is brought together and enhanced by kale.

Umami is also the meaty taste of foods which describes the meaty texture of the mushrooms.

The flatbread is enough as a meal for two people, or you can slice it into 3 to 4 pieces as an appetizer. It’s a delicious cross between an appetizer and pizza. It’s also a great substitute for Amy’s Roasted Vegetable Pizza, a gluten-free, no-cheese pizza, which I can no longer find.

The flatbread is free of the following common allergens: dairy, gluten, soy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. It’s suitable for those with food allergies, and following a vegan or vegetarian diet.

Other flatbread flavors include plant-based Chick’n, Smoked Bac’n, Ranch Style, Tomato, Sunflower Seed Pesto & Argula, and Meatless Italian Sausage Style Crumbles, Roasted Pepper & Kale.
