While pork and beef are the traditional meats used in hot dogs, Foster Farms Gluten Free Corn Dogs are made with chicken. The hot dogs do not contain hormones and are encased in a honey-coated cornmeal batter. If you dip them in mustard, you have the perfect blend of crunchy, sweet, sour, and salty. Eventually, they may be the next iconic food on a stick, along with traditional corn dogs.

At first glance, the corn dogs have so much going for them – they are made with uncured, grass fed beef, and don’t contain antibiotics, gluten, or dairy. While I like the batter – it is crispy with a cornbread taste- the beef hot dog is inedible. There is only one word to describe the taste of the hot dog and it is repulsive. I don’t use this word lightly as it describes the taste and smell of the hot dog. To explain, the smell is of burnt plastic and the taste is unnatural, in the same way that deviled ham does not resemble real meat. As a result, I had to peel the breading which was the only part I could eat. Indeed, it is disappointing considering Applegate makes tasty gluten free chicken nuggets (https://liveglutenanddairyfree.com/fish-and-chicks).

If you want to enjoy a carnival staple food, try Foster Farms Gluten Free Corn Dogs. They are made with chicken and the crispy batter dipped in honey gives it just the right amount of sweetness. However, you can pass on Applegate, which should be sunk to the bottom of a dunk tank.
