Whoopie! and Other Pies

As if the whoopie pie taste wasn’t enough, the name is also delightful. Because it sounds like whoopee cushion, whoopie pie just sounds fun. As stated in What’s Cooking America, whoopie pies were considered a special treat because they were made from leftover batter. According to Amish legend, when children would find these treats in their lunch bags, they would shout “Whoopie!”

The Piping Gourmets Whoopie Pies

You too will yell “whoopie!” when you taste these pies. The original and probably most famous flavor is chocolate but they also come in vanilla, mint and raspberry. They are found in the frozen section and when thawed, the cake has a sponge cake texture. They have a creamy filling and are individually wrapped, which I love because it preserves the freshness. They are free from the top eight major allergens – gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, tree nuts, peanuts, fish and shellfish.

Katz Personal Size Apple Pie

The apple pie is perfect, not too sweet or tart. The apples are tender and perfectly spiced. Although the crust does tend to crumble, it doesn’t contain gluten, which holds pastries together, so crumbling is to be expected. Other flavors are cherry and blueberry. They are gluten, dairy, soy and nut free.

Katz Mini Pies

These mini pies are flaky with a real fruit filling and glaze topping. Flavors include apple and blueberry. They are a perfect snack or a mini dessert if you want just a taste of sweetness.  They are gluten, dairy, soy and nut free.

Conclusion

The Piping Gourmets make tasty whoopie pies worthy of the exclamation and come in different flavors. Katz makes personal and mini pies that taste like bakery pies. Both are small sized treats found in the freezer.

Fun Food Fact

The whoopie pie is the official state treat of Maine. Additionally, whoopie pie is also known as a “gob,” a “black and white,” a “bob” and “BFO,” which stands for Big Fat Oreo.

Did You Know?

There are many spelling variations and definitions of whoopie. The most famous person with the name is Whoopi Goldberg. She has stated that her name was taken from a whoopee cushion; “When you’re performing on stage, you never really have time to go into the bathroom and close the door. So, if you get a little gassy, you’ve got to let it go. So, people used to say to me, ‘You’re like a whoopee cushion.'” Whoopi’s real name is Caryn Elaine Johnson.

Some famous expressions are “making whoopee’” – no explanation needed – from the jazz song made famous by Ella Fitzgerald. A whoopee cap is a hat, famously worn by Jughead from the Archie comics. Although whoopie or whoopee can be used to express joy, it can also be used sarcastically as in “whoopee doo”.
