Walden Farms Ranch
While I like that the dressing is free – calorie, sugar, fat, cholesterol, carb, gluten and dairy free, it tastes like sour cream, and not ranch dressing. In fact, an ingredient listed is “sour cream flavors.” But it is too tart to even be a sour cream substitute. It has a sharp vinegar taste that would not go well on a baked potato. The dressing is made from vinegar, yeast extract, garlic, onion and lemon flavors. It comes in a bottle and convenient to go packets.
Sir Kensington’s Classic Ranch
The dressing is made with sunflower oil, vinegar, dill weed, yeast extract and garlic juice. It is non-GMO, Keto certified, Paleo certified and made with organic certified humane free-range eggs. It’s super tangy and has a strong dill weed taste that would be better on fish as dill or tartar sauce.
Tessemae’s Creamy Ranch
The Classic Ranch flavor is tangy and a bit sour (containing lemon juice, vinegar and mustard) and you can taste the dill, but it’s not as strong as Sir Kensington’s Ranch. My favorite flavor is the Cilantro Lime Ranch, which has a great zesty citrus flavor. It’s great as a salad dressing or dip. To go packs are convenient for lunch and travel. It is organic, non-GMO, made with cage free eggs, sugar free, dairy free, gluten free, Whole30 approved and Keto friendly. Other flavors include Habanero Ranch, Avocado Ranch, Everything Bagel, and Buffalo Ranch.
Newman’s Own Avocado Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil Ranch
The dressing is very sour and right away I tasted lemon, which is a main ingredient. It’s dairy free, Keto certified, Paleo certified, sugar free, gluten free, soy and canola free. In addition to the lemon juice, it also contains avocado oil, olive oil, cage free egg yolks, vinegar, and dill. I like other Newman’s Own dressings, but this one is too sour to enjoy.
Hidden Valley Plant Powered Ranch
I would have been very disappointed if one of the most popular and well recognized brands screwed up ranch dressing, but luckily, they didn’t. It’s hard to believe it doesn’t contain milk and it tastes every bit as good as their dairy based dressing. It’s made with soybean and/or canola oil, vinegar, garlic, and onion. This is my new favorite ranch dressing and I expect it to fly off the shelves. Go ahead, pour it on your salad, dip your buffalo wings in it, and even put it on your pizza and burgers.
Conclusion
Many of the dressings don’t actually taste like ranch dressing and would be more suitable as tartar or dill sauce. Others are just too sour to enjoy. But Hidden Valley successfully turned their dairy based ranch dressing into a dairy free and plant based version. It has the taste and thick texture of real ranch dressing, which no other brand has been able to recreate until now.
