It’s not too surprising I’m seeing many products with oat milk. According to a sales statistic from SPINS reported by Food Navigator, oat milk is the second most popular plant-based milk, behind almond milk. Even Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts are offering oat milk as an alternative to milk. Speaking of coffee, I review two canned oat milk lattes, La Colombe and Lavazza. And I also review three ice cream brands made with oat milk, Oatly, Planet Oat, and Van Leeuwen.

Oat Milk Latte and Ice Cream

Oat Milk

Oat milk is made by soaking oats in water, blending them, then straining them with a cheesecloth or nut milk bag to leave the pulp behind.

Oat Milk Canned Latte

La Colombe Oat Milk Draft Double Latte

La Colombe’s can state it’s creamy and balanced and I agree. It’s very smooth with just a touch of sweetness. The ingredients include oat milk, coffee, chicory root fiber, cane sugar, canola oil, and sea salt. Because of the chicory root fiber, it has 4 grams of fiber.

According to the website, the coffee is

  • 100% Arabica, single-origin, Brazilian cold brew coffee
  • 120 mg natural caffeine (1.5 cups of coffee)
  • Dairy-Free
  • Gluten-Free
  • Kosher
  • Vegan

Their other oat milk flavors are mocha, salted caramel, peppermint mocha, vanilla, and pumpkin spice latte.

Lavazza Double Shot Cold Brew with Oat Milk

Lavazza’s latte contains 100% Arabica coffee, organic oat milk, cane sugar, sunflower oil, and sea salt.

While it is a dark roast and has a stronger coffee taste, it also has a strong oat milk taste, which was a negative for me. I wanted to taste the coffee with just a splash of creamer.

Out of the two canned lattes, my pick is La Colombe for its smooth taste. It’s a perfect coffee drink on the go and also a surprising way to add fiber to your diet.

Oat Milk Ice Cream

Van Leeuwen Vanilla Wildberry Swirl

I had never heard of this brand and was curious. I’m glad I tried it because I am not disappointed. Although the ice cream bar has a dark chocolate coating, it is not bitter. Instead, the sweet vanilla ice cream and berry swirls nicely offset the strong dark chocolate flavor.

The ingredients are oat milk, cane sugar, coconut cream, cocoa butter, chocolate, cocoa powder, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, vanilla beans, and salt. The allergens listed are coconut and soy.

Oatly Strawberry

Not only is Oatly delicious, but it is probably one of the smoothest and easiest to scoop ice cream brands. And it has a fresh sweet strawberry taste. It is certified vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO verified, glyphosate-free, and kosher.

The ingredients are oat milk, strawberry, sugar, coconut oil, dextrose, and glucose syrup.

Planet Oat Mint Fudge Swirl Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert

Imagine Andes chocolate mint candy in creamy vanilla ice cream and you’ll know what this ice cream tastes like. It has two great flavors combined.

The ingredients are oat milk, fudge, corn starch, cane sugar, coconut oil, sea salt, and sunflower oil.

Which ice cream is the best? It’s a three-way tie because they are all delectable.

Conclusion

Although almond milk is the most popular plant-based milk, oat milk has advantages when it comes to latte and ice cream. First, it has a rich and smooth taste that is not bitter like almond milk. Second, oat milk resembles cow milk’s creamy texture. Finally, while many vegan ice cream brands use coconut milk, a disadvantage is a strong coconut flavor, which you may not want in coffee and ice cream. In contrast, oat milk allows the other flavors to come through.

Fun Food Fact

Compared with milk and other alternative milk like almond and soy, oat milk contains more fiber. This soluble fiber may help lower cholesterol.

Did You Know?

It takes six times as much water to produce one carton of almond milk as it does oat milk.
