With the cold air, snow, and layers upon layers of clothing, I bet you could use a cup of warm soup right now. According to Instacart, November is peak soup season, which is unsurprising considering soup is a hearty winter meal. It’s also not surprising that chicken noodle soup is the #1 soup purchased from October through February.

If you love chicken noodle soup or are feeling under the weather, don’t despair; there are so many gluten- and dairy-free alternatives. Options include gluten-free grains, such as cauliflower pasta and rice. And there are Wild Zora soups, which are paleo and do not contain any grains. Instead, the key ingredients are veggies and spices.

There are also options for thicker soups, such as butternut squash, split pea soup, and pot roast.

Chili

You may wonder why I’m including chili in this soup review. While chili is not technically a soup but a stew, it is like soup, with less liquid and more chunkiness. If it surprises you that some chili brands contain gluten, wheat is often used to thicken chili, just as it thickens gravy and sauces.

Please be aware that many of the listed soup and chili brands also make foods with gluten or dairy, so read the labels carefully.

You can see the following posts for more in-depth product reviews, but be aware that Save Harvest soups are discontinued, which is unfortunate because they made great chowder and bisque using coconut milk instead of cream. Also, I used to find Beetnik chili at Whole Foods, but now they sell their products in their stores. And I have not included Lotus Foods Tom Yum Rice Ramen and Wolfgang Puck Organic Free-Range Chicken with White and Wild Rice because I did not enjoy their tastes.

Did You Know?

Dr. Irwin Ziment, a pulmonary specialist and professor at UCLA, states that an amino acid released from cooked chicken chemically resembles the drug acetylcysteine, which is prescribed for bronchitis and other respiratory issues. Dr. Ziment also states that garlic, cayenne pepper, and curry work as expectorants and cough medicines (https://www.hamilton.edu/news/story/mom-was-right-chicken-soup-is-the-cure).

“Soup is the song of the hearth… and the home.” – Louis P. De Gouy
