Vegan Sour Cream
Tofutti Better Than Sour Cream

The best way for me to describe vegan sour cream is to compare it to a similar product often used as a substitute, yogurt. Made with soybean, palm fruit and olive, Tofutti’s sour cream is comparable to plain yogurt. It has a very mild taste and is spreadable like cream cheese. It is vegan, dairy free, kosher pareve, gluten free and contains no cholesterol. It does contain soy.

Kite Hill Sour Cream Alternative

Almond milk can be bitter, which in this case is an advantage, because it makes Kite Hill sour cream taste like the real thing. In addition to almond milk, it also contains coconut, rice starch and chickpea protein. It is non-GMO, dairy free, soy free, gluten free, vegan and kosher. And it has no sugar.

Crispy Onions
Natural Earth French Fried Crispy Onions

Crunchy and delicious, the crispy onions are not only perfect on salads and potatoes, but also on burgers and vegan mac and cheese as a substitute for bread crumb topping. It contains organic onion, palm oil and buckwheat, which despite its name, does not contain wheat. It is free of gluten, dairy and eggs. It is also kosher, non-GMO, organic and vegan.

Tortilla Strips
Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips, Tri-Color

The tortilla strips are made with corn flour and sunflower and/or safflower oil, which adds a buttery taste to dairy free popcorn (https://liveglutenanddairyfree.com/vegan-popcorn-vegan-doritos-and-popcorn-shaped-like-doritos/). Not only do the strips add a nice crunch to salads, but they are also aesthetically pleasing, adding flavor and color to salads. And there is nothing artificial about the colors- they are naturally made with beet and black carrot juice.  Their slogan “restaurant favorites at home” is a perfect way to describe the topping.

Salad Cheeze
Pimp My Salad Cashew Parmesan

The grated cheeze is shelf stable, in a resealable pack. Because it’s 55% cashew based and sunflower seeds are the second ingredient listed, it has a strong nutty flavor. While the nutty and fine texture add a nice crunch and make it easy to sprinkle, it does not have a Parmesan taste. I prefer Go Veggie, Violife and Follow Your Heart Parmesan cheeze (https://liveglutenanddairyfree.com/vegan-cheese-not-dairy-crack/). It is vegan, gluten free, dairy free, Paleo, Keto and GMO free.

Croutons
Olivia’s Croutons Gluten Free Garlic

The croutons are made with a gluten free blend of millet, sorghum, rice, arrowroot and potato. They add a nice crunch to salads and soup, and remain crispy even after being drenched in salad dressing. They have a tasty garlic flavor and are also seasoned with rosemary, basil, and parsley.

Conclusion

If variety is the spice of life, then toppings give salads and potatoes life by adding flavor, crunch and even color.

Fun Food Fact

If you like potatoes in your salad, you may want to try a buddha bowl. It typically consists of rice or whole grains, roasted veggies, greens and protein. The name is derived from the fact that it is packed so full, it has a rounded “belly” on the top similar to the belly of a buddha.
